What Character.AI actually is Character.AI (or c.ai for short) is essentially a chatbot site. It’s a lot like ChatGPT, except instead of helping you write an essay or code, its main focus is roleplaying with your favourite characters. For example, this could be… like, Rick from Rick & Morty, an anime character, or… me…? I don’t fucking know, use your fucking imagination. Gucci Morty?
Your browser does not support the video tag. ignore ts :D Its History c.ai was first launched to the public back in 2022. It was extremely simple, and users flooded in almost immediately. The premise was so simple, yet so ridiculously addictive. You could literally make any bot you wanted in two minutes and just chat away for LITERAL hours. The amount of times I’ve opened this fucking app is insane.
The problem? Running AI like this costs a shit ton of money. Every single message you send has to be calculated by massive server farms, and that bill adds up fast. While millions of teenagers and bored people were using it every single day, almost nobody was actually paying for their shitty subscription. Add in the fact that they kept putting filters on everything to make the bots dumber, people were already getting tired of it.
Bankruptcy On the 13th of October, 2026, c.ai officially filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy[1],[2].
What does Chapter 11 actually mean? It basically lets a company freeze its debts and reorganize under a court’s watch so they don’t instantly have to shut down[2].
In this case, though, they aren’t reorganizing to fix themselves. The filing is being used specifically to set up a “value-maximizing sale” of their assets[2]. Scary corporate words? It literally just means an auction. They are completely broke, so they’re selling the whole company off to the highest bidder.
This auction process is supposed to take about 1 to 2 months (between November and December), and they’ve already got what’s called a “stalking horse” bidder, which is just a term for the first guaranteed bidder in an auction[1].
And who is that bidder? Disney[1]! Yes, one more $1,499 Mickey Mouse™ plushie please!!!
Why did this happen? The reason they’ve decided to sell themselves off in the first place is because they literally cannot afford to keep their shit on. Running AI is wildly expensive. While c.ai treats their free users like shit, constantly throttles them, and harvests all their private chat data to feed into training datasets or sell to whoever wants it, it still isn’t enough to make a profit.
They’ve been buried under MASSIVE lawsuits. For one, big corporations (including Disney, wow!) have been threatening them over copyright infringement because the site is flooded with their characters. But far worse than that, they’ve faced massive lawsuits over kids tragically taking their own lives after developing delusions and… “extreme” attachments to these bots.
c.ai’s response to these tragedies has been, disgusting, for lack of a better term. Instead of taking real accountability, they claimed zero fault and immediately tried to drag the cases into forced arbitration so the public wouldn’t hear about it.
Look, I’m not saying c.ai should be let off the hook here. Shoving unmonitored bots into the hands of lonely kids without a care in the world is pretty fucking dumb. But parents and carers have an equal responsibility to actually monitor what their children are doing online. c.ai doesn’t sit there watching chats 24/7. They literally only grab your logs, shove them into a training dataset, or sell them off. You can’t just hand a kid a screen, let an unhinged chatbot raise them, and act surprised when something goes wrong. It’s a failure on both sides, and right now, I think the parent is at fault.
Will they still be up? Yes. Well, for now, but yes.
If they didn’t find a buyer, the site would die. But Disney has already signed an agreement to be the initial bidder, and it’s pretty obvious they aren’t backing out[1]. Well, they can’t… it’s already signed… But now that Disney’s bought the platform, there’s pretty much only one expectation here: It’s going to fucking hell. Disney’s just going to force in some corpo-slop and force you to buy 5 Mickey™ plushies just to even browse the app.
Character.AI could’ve been an awesome platform if they took a better turn in 2024, but it all comes down to who’s dick they wanted to suck harder, and how much money they could push out by stripping away safety rails.
Fucking idiots. Want to wipe all your messages in a server, or just from the platform using a script? Nope! Perma-ban. “We are Discord, and we love making life hard for our users!”
So, where would I go to if I want to talk to my friends, but also not be milked dry by data brokers? Hmm…
Platforms Fluxer [Link] Fluxer is essentially Discord’s privacy-focused cousin. While not as tightly-locked as Matrix or SimpleX, it’s still a great choice if coming from Discord. If you ask your friends to move to IRC, 9 times out of 10, they will just block you. Fake friends, I know. However, Fluxer’s features easily outweigh Discord’s in terms of… well, everything. IRC has been around since 1988, and provides extremely great features for what it’s worth. It works like this: you connect to an IRC server using whatever client you want, and boom. It’s used a lot by sysadmins, so unless you’re techy, stay out of #tech. M’kay? oh, and #sysadmin. Stay out.
Trying out IRC won’t kill you. You can host your own homeserver, or use a public one like Unredacted.org. While Element is busy trying to cash in on a missed opportunity to monetize open-source software, people are using Matrix to mask their identity and protect themselves; such as journalists, whistleblowers, and private investigators. Matrix provides secure E2EE, and it’s rather safe. Just… don’t use the official Matrix.org homeserver. It’s frequently blocked from joining foreign rooms due to their high volume of spam accounts. Unredacted is a great homeserver to use.
okay, this looks like discord. back on track?
Signal [Link] Signal is one of the best choices here. It’s a gold standard in the industry, especially since it’s been heavily audited and uses strong cryptographic protocols to ensure message data is safe and protected; regardless of whether the relay server has been intercepted or not.
Unlike WhatsApp, which is owned by a megacorporation that prioritizes grabbing every bit of data it can reach, Signal retains practically nothing. The government subpoenaed them, and all they could physically hand over was: When an account was created and the last time an account connected. That’s it. It was developed by David Baszucki and Erik Cassel, Cassel later passing due to cancer in 2013. Gaining slow traction through 2006-2012, their main goal was to create a platform where users could build their own “worlds”. They weren’t as evil as they are now, they were simply just looking to create a platform; a kind one.
From 2013-2018, Roblox finally solidified a currency system. This introduced DevEx (Developer Exchange), allowing game developers to exchange Robux for cash. They then pivoted towards mobile devices, allowing a whole new sector of users to explore the platform. This was where most of their growth came from. In 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic hit. This not only shifted people to become more online, but also caused Roblox a huge spike in growth. So much so, that major brands such as Nike and Gucci decided to… make marketing hubs on it… Whatever man.
The year following that, they decided to list up on the NYSE (New York Stock Exchange) on March 10th, their initial market cap being about ~$42.6B and their price being around ~$69.50. They later reached ~$135 per share on the 19th of November, their market cap being around ~$89.1B.
“L’Horreur”, begins. Greetings to all my French-ians. If that place still exists. Roblox’s major downfall began when they started making really shit decisions… which was since 2013. Coincidental, huh? Anyways, start of 2023. David Baszucki feels as if Roblox is extremely… undertalented. He wants to shift the demographic away from little kids, and move it towards mature adults. 17-24 years of age was his target. While he did feel as if kids were still a core part of Roblox, he felt as if adults could create much more high-quality content instead of children who barely know how to count to four. He wanted full-time studios who had the funding to make games, not just kids who didn’t provide any funding to the platform. This, was the beginning.
Age verification was introduced into Roblox in 2021. It wasn’t pushed that much, and only served to those who wanted to utilize DevEx, or to those who wanted to access features which were only allowed to those who gave in and submitted their ID. They utilize the vendor “Persona” (formerly utilizing “Veriff”) to do so. However, this feature would then be used in such an abusive way by Roblox, to the point where you can’t even talk to people without being verified; literally.
Persona called, said we’re not meeting quota. We need to get more people to give in their ID’s!
Roblox’s push for mature audiences didn’t come without consequence. Not only did they get older audiences, they also brought in pedophiles. Nice one. Pedophiles have existed on Roblox for many, many years, but it’s never been this bad. Recent controversy surrounding developers has come out, and even accusations which have been completely faked online; such as the controversy surrounding Zeal and Ren (I will be covering that soon.)
Ending Statement Many people have become desensitized to situations like this because it happens so much. Not only that, people stop realizing how real real-life is. They don’t understand the weight of what they say, regardless of whether it’s online or not. Platforms like Discord and Roblox permanently log what you say, and fight real legal battles just to keep your “worthless” messages. It’s a useful way for them to profile you, and until we do something about it, it’ll only go down from here. People online say stuff to other people for no personal gain. They act as if they’re on top when there’s simply no more hierarchy. In this world, we are the bottom. The ones who hold our data are the ones who truly own our lives.
And as a little side-note to all the Roblox game developers, community managers, and others involved… please, just moderate your communities. Watch over your members, regardless of how big or small your community is. Respond to incidents right away, don’t shrug it off as a small little issue. It’s your responsibility to do something. Even if there’s no consequence for not doing anything, it only ruins your image in someone’s eyes. You have a duty, and unless you swear to it, you will only be the same person everyone used to see you as: Unfaithful.
Bye.
Sources A machine was used to generate the statistics. Lobbying the government.
Meta has now successfully lobbied the government with millions upon millions of dollars, and bills have now been passed to require age verification to access platforms, all in the name of protecting kids! Yes, put everything on protecting the fucking kids. Now, Mark Zuckerberg, would you mind explaining how revenue has gone up by almost 302% after implementing age verification measures, sir?
Age verification has also been used for mass-surveillance. Sort of like flock cameras, but online. They’re on every site you visit, to the point where these ID verification companies work together to create profiles on you. You, are the product. You, are the money. You, are their paycheck. The reason they aren’t dead yet is because people are inevitably going to give in their ID. That’s the painful truth of it all. There will always be more people who keep the circus running, and less who choose to strike.
Is there a way around this? Unless they’re using easy-to-spoof algorithms, no. Not really. ID verification is notoriously hard to get around with recent enhancements within the Machine Learning sector, especially with Persona. It’s only gonna get deeper and darker from here, they say. There are obviously options around this, such as other measures of verification, but it depends on the platform, and sometimes, there may not be any other options.
It’s best to rely on open-source software and utilize systems made for privacy, such as picking out a general-purpose Linux distribution instead of Windows, or certain software such as Fluxer instead of Discord, LMStudio/llama.cpp instead of ChatGPT (or any AI service, for that matter) and Codeberg instead of GitHub. Or better yet, self-host your own Forgejo instance! It’s essentially GitHub, but written in GoLang and made for the community.
Remember, your privacy should always come before anything else online. If you disagree, then you are in the wrong place. Your privacy was a right that was promised to you, and shouldn’t be lost to time.
What can I do about it? For now, all you can really do is adapt to the changes. Going dark isn’t suddenly going to make you a criminal. Wanting privacy is natural, and feeling as if the government is restricting your every move is… the exact same thought everyone else is having. The definition of privacy is: “The state of being free from public attention or unsanctioned intrusion.” This essentially means, in plain text, being free of watching eyes. If I asked 50 people in a room if they would like to be watched while they showered, most, if not all, would say no. A big tech corporation, such as Google, will always be watching.
So… what’s your point? Google is essentially the Big Brother of Android phones. They track your location every few seconds, monitoring your position1, and even listening in, which they state is so that your phone can pick up “Hey Google”. Apple actually faced a lawsuit regarding this exact sort of thing2. My point is that these big corporations are doing things that are borderline illegal, and they’re getting away with it. AOSP is slowly becoming a hollow shell, with Google moving it away from the free, open domain it used to be, into a locked-down and closed shell. This is all just an effort to raise their market price, please investors, and generate more profit to do so.
I don’t have anything to hide. Why should I care? The ’nothing to hide’ argument is… absolute trash. Privacy isn’t about hiding something illegal, it’s about having a boundary between your personal life and the rest of the world. If you really have nothing to hide, send me your whole photo library. Take off your bathroom door, or just livestream yourself showering. You wouldn’t do any of those now, would you? You do value privacy; you just confuse yourself with the border between privacy and doing something wrong.
Well… How do I fix it then? Fixing your privacy can range from extremely simple tasks, like ditching Chrome for Firefox or Librewolf, to completely ditching Windows and the stock firmware that comes with your phone. There’s this pretty cool dude called Madaidan, you should totally check out his work. Also, Privsec too! Privsec is extremely useful, and maintained by people who know what they’re talking about. Check them out!
Ditching Chrome (or working with it?) Google is one of the biggest data harvesters in the world, right next to Meta and Palantir. Getting rid of Chrome already gets rid of one extra company to worry about. Installing LibreWolf only takes a few clicks, and you can feel the benefit of not supporting an AI slop farm. Not to mention, LibreWolf comes with in-built privacy features that block trackers and ads; pretty cool, right? There’s also the option of “Degoogled Chromium”; Chrome is essentially just the Chromium engine (Which is Open-Source) stuffed full of trackers and proprietary bloatware that you do not need. Installing Chromium is simple, but setting up privacy flags can be rather tedious and time-consuming. A great middle-ground option is Helium, which is privacy-first, open-source and is made with the consumer in mind.
Switch DNS Resolvers A DNS resolver literally just figures out what the IP address of a server is, and tells your browser the IP. It’s a simplified explanation, but it explains most of it. Changing DNS resolvers not only enhances your privacy, but using DNS-over-HTTPS (DoH) makes it so that your own Internet Service Provider can’t even snoop on the queries you’re making, or hijack these requests… But you’ll actually still need a VPN to hide the destination IP… Pretty cool either way, huh? Changing this in your browser setting is relatively simple, but you can also apply it to your whole network through your router’s settings.
Get off of Windows. Windows is a data farm. Don’t want to read anymore? You love Windows? I don’t care. Open-source projects like Fedora Linux or SecureBlue (For those who are high-risk targets) are recommended, and extremely user-friendly. It’s better to be on a system that doesn’t let you send data than a system that wants to send its own, no?
Conclusion Your privacy depends on whether you are willing to fix it. It’s like a muscle; you either use it, or lose it. Don’t let these big corporations get their way, or they’ll only keep doing wrong. Money is the root of all evil, and I can say that to the fullest extent.
We all can.
Relevant Blogs Sandworm.cc Privsec.dev Madaidans Insecurities Sources “Does Google track my movement?” 1:37:35 ↩︎
BBC News ‘Apple to pay $95m to settle Siri ’listening’ lawsuit’ article ↩︎

https://spvcer3ii.dev/blog/posts/2026-10-11-privacy-matters/

You know what pisses me off more than having to update my system?

People who don’t care about their privacy.

Let’s first define ‘Privacy’.

Privacy Matters: Fix It!
An image of mr zen hosted on Xyphen Fileshare :o
What is Xyphen Fileshare? Xyphen Fileshare, in its barest of descriptions, is just a fileshare. That’s all it does, point a link to a file.
We run a public instance so anyone can use it out of the box, but you are never restricted to our servers. Xyphen Fileshare is built for self-hosting. Admins and developers can clone the repository, tweak the code to their liking, host it for their own private network, or just fork it. Hell, do whatever you want with it. There’s no personal gain or profit motive here, it was built for the people, and that’s what open source is all about.
Why? What about {insert service here}? Well, that’s the real question here. A lot of people believe that the current service they’re using suits their needs amazingly. I’m not here for those people: I’m here for the few that don’t have their needs catered.
Xyphen Fileshare has a few features which I personally haven’t seen in many filesharing services, since they’re extremely… well, expensive to host. Or just overlooked. For starters, Xyphen Fileshare supports forever files… cheer if you want to. Essentially, they’re just files which last forever, with the only downside being that your file is there for as long as the service is up. This will hopefully be fixed with the addition of file tokens, which allows a user to delete their files upon request, but this is currently a low-priority under many other fixes and features. For now, requesting the admin to delete the file is the best course of action for that.
Another cool feature is that Xyphen Fileshare hashes uploads. No, this isn’t encryption, CryptPad exists exactly for that purpose. If you plan on hosting a private (or public) fileshare instance, hashing will be extremely useful to prevent CSAM, illicit material, or distribution of IP/unwanted content. While this may look a bit like what a surveillance state would enjoy, this is actually entirely the opposite; it’s to protect your data. Imagine a package. A hash is essentially a unique barcode generated by the file’s contents; the server scans the barcode to see if it’s on a banned list, without ever opening the package.
The admin dashboard homepage :p
Well, okay. That might not pique your interest. However, you can actually configure the expiry time of your files. For example, if you want a file to last only an hour, you can just set that. 72 hours is the default for most instances, however an administrator can configure the default themselves. Once your file is expired, it gets wiped instantly. No delays, nothing. Want a backup? Too bad.
So… Cool stuff. Where do I find it? Our public instance is hosted on xyphen.org/fileshare, and our source code is here. If you want to help work on the software, message me! I’m open to any help, whether that’s through hardening, UX polishing, or just general QoL enhancements.
Xyphen: Privacy is a right, not a feature.
